إجابة هندسية

Rate the ignition capacitor by pulse withstand, not by steady-state volts. A 12 kV strike at 500 ns risetime reaches 24 kV/µs and pushes 50 A of displacement current through a 1 nF part. Pulse PD inception runs at 60–80% of the DC value, so hold the pulse peak below 0.77× the DC rating and use a 20 kV part for a 12 kV strike. Prove it over 100,000 cycles.

  • Set the DC rating at 1.5–2× the peak pulse voltage
  • Certify pulse withstand at 1.2× peak with a defined waveform
  • Hold the pulse risetime above 500 ns with a damping resistor
  • Request pulse-excitation PD data, not just the DC figure
  • Run 100,000 ignition cycles and check tanδ every 10,000

الملخص

The ignition capacitor of a UV lamp holds 10–20 kV between starts and discharges into the trigger transformer within microseconds, at 10–50 kV/µs and tens of amperes. A DC voltage rating says almost nothing about that duty. This article gives the dielectric strength, displacement current and pulse-PD arithmetic, four field failure modes, the risetime rule, and the 100,000-cycle test that qualifies the part.

1. مقدمة

No component in a UV curing supply sees a harder electrical duty than the high-voltage ceramic capacitor in the ignition loop. At every lamp start it holds off 10–20 kV peak and then discharges its stored energy into the trigger transformer within a few microseconds.

The current transient reaches tens of amperes and the voltage slew rate reaches 10–50 kV/µs. Between starts the same part sits at a fraction of its rating for hours, and at the moment of ignition it is driven to its limit.

The usual datasheet column, a DC voltage rating at an ambient temperature, answers a different question. The ignition loop asks whether the part can hold that voltage for five microseconds, ten thousand times, without drifting.

This article gives the pulse rating method: the pulse withstand waveform, the dV/dt limit, the PD test under pulse excitation, the derating rules and the 100,000-cycle life test.

2. الآلية الأساسية

2.1 Intrinsic dielectric strength and thickness

The instantaneous withstand voltage of a ceramic capacitor is set first by the intrinsic strength of the dielectric and the thickness of the ceramic.

E_bd = V_bd / d

where E_bd is the breakdown field, V_bd is the breakdown voltage and d is the dielectric thickness. SrTiO₃-based Class I material holds 20–40 kV/mm, so a 12 kV ignition part needs 0.3–0.6 mm of ceramic. The margin between the pulse operating point and the breakdown voltage is then set by porosity, voids and micro-cracks from manufacturing.

2.2 Displacement current and the dV/dt limit

A fast pulse drives a displacement current through the electrode stack, and that current flows through structures sized for steady-state current.

I_disp = C · dV/dt

where I_disp is the displacement current, C is the capacitance and dV/dt is the voltage slew rate. A 1 nF part at 50 kV/µs carries 50 A through its electrodes. When the local current density exceeds the fusing limit of a thin electrode, the electrode melts, and the failure presents as a short circuit from a current surge.

2.3 Pulse partial discharge inception

Under a fast edge the voltage across an internal void rises faster than charge can redistribute, so the void sees more field than a DC test would predict.

V_PDIV,pulse = k_void · V_PDIV,DC

where V_PDIV,pulse is the pulse inception voltage, V_PDIV,DC is the inception voltage measured with DC, and k_void sits at 0.6–0.8 for a typical void distribution. A part that passes a DC PD test at 1.2× rated voltage can therefore discharge inside a void during every strike.

2.4 Pulse operating margin

Combining the two effects gives the rule that ties a pulse waveform to a catalogue rating.

V_pulse_max ≤ 0.8 · V_PDIV,pulse

where V_pulse_max is the highest pulse peak allowed at the part and V_PDIV,pulse is the pulse inception voltage of §2.3. With V_PDIV,DC at or above 1.2× the rated voltage, the pulse peak has to stay below 0.77× the rated DC voltage. A 12 kV strike therefore needs a 20 kV part, which is the 1.6× margin that keeps the operating point clear of the threshold.

Fig. 1 — A 12 kV strike at 500 ns risetime stays inside the 50 kV/µs rating, while a 200 ns edge reaches 60 kV/µs and cracks the ceramic.

3. نقاط الضعف الهندسية

Pain Point 1: A DC rating applied to a pulse

The most common field failure is a 12 kV DC-rated part that dies after a few hundred ignition pulses, because the pulse amplitude was allowed to reach the 12 kV rating. That number carries no pulse margin. The same strike waveform fits a 20 kV part with a 1.6× margin.

Pain Point 2: dV/dt cracking at the electrode edge

Trigger circuits with an undersized damping resistor produce edges below 200 ns, which is 60–100 kV/µs at a 12–20 kV peak. The mechanical stress at the electrode edge fractures the ceramic, and the crack becomes a PD channel on later pulses. The fault appears as intermittent ignition misses that recover after the cabinet cools.

Pain Point 3: PD that only exists under pulses

A part that passes the factory DC PD test at 1.2× rated voltage still produces 20–50 pC bursts during ignition, because a fast edge couples energy into voids that DC testing never excites. After 10,000 starts the erosion becomes a tracking path, and the part fails short and takes the trigger transformer with it.

Pain Point 4: Thermal cycling between strikes

The capacitor cools between ignition attempts and self-heats during the strike through I² × ESR loss. The strain at the solder joint and the ceramic-electrode interface accumulates over 100,000 starts until a hairline crack opens, and a later strike flashes it over.

4. خطوات التصميم

Strategy 1: Specify pulse withstand as its own rating

Require pulse withstand certification at 1.2× the peak operating voltage on a defined waveform, either 1.2/50 µs or the actual trigger waveform. Set the DC rating at 1.5–2× the pulse peak and treat the DC number as a secondary specification.

Strategy 2: Control dV/dt in the circuit

Add a damping resistor or a series inductor so that the pulse risetime stays above 500 ns. At a 12 kV peak that holds the slew rate at 24 kV/µs, which is half the 50 kV/µs rating of the reference part.

Strategy 3: Verify PD under pulse excitation

Request a pulse-PD test: apply the operating trigger waveform at 1.2× amplitude and measure with a wideband detector. Accept only parts with pulse PD below 5 pC, measured the same way the part will be used.

Strategy 4: Use a Class I dielectric for mechanical strength

اختر N4700 (T3M) strontium titanate with tanδ at or below 0.1%. The dense microstructure resists electrostriction fatigue better than a porous Class II body, and the low loss keeps self-heating between strikes negligible. A مكثف الفيلم reaches the same capacitance at a lower dV/dt capability at this node.

Strategy 5: Life-test the pulse duty

Run 100,000 ignition cycles at the worst-case amplitude and repetition rate before production, and measure capacitance, tanδ and PD every 10,000 cycles. Reject the design when tanδ rises above 0.1% or the capacitance drifts more than 2%.

Strategy 6: Record the transient in the controller

Log the peak trigger voltage and the count of failed start attempts in the lamp controller. A rising trend in failed starts is the earliest signature of capacitor fatigue, and it schedules replacement before the part fails short.

5. HVC capacitors for ignition duty

Three requirements drive the choice at this node: a ceramic that survives electrostriction, a certified pulse rating on the trigger waveform, and a PD screen that holds under a fast edge. HVC builds N4700 parts for that set.

التوصيل والدعم

Standard parts ship in 4–8 weeks and matched sets in 6–10 weeks. Above 20 kV the ignition capacitor is available as a series stack with matching مقاومات التدرج, and the charging rectifier in the same loop can be supplied as a ثنائي سريع الاستعادة.

Send the trigger waveform with amplitude, risetime and repetition rate, plus the target lamp power. HVC returns a capacitor with pulse-withstand certification, dV/dt data and a pulse-PD report, and samples for your own 100,000-cycle test within two weeks.

6. أسئلة مكررة

Q1: Why does a 12 kV DC-rated part fail on a 12 kV pulse?

Because the DC rating describes a steady state and the pulse adds a second stress. Pulse PD inception sits at 60–80% of the DC inception voltage, so the pulse operating point needs the margin that the DC number does not carry. Use a 20 kV part for a 12 kV strike.

Q2: How do I check the dV/dt of my trigger circuit?

Measure the risetime across the capacitor and divide the peak by it. A 12 kV edge in 200 ns is 60 kV/µs, above the 50 kV/µs rating of the reference part, while the same peak in 500 ns is 24 kV/µs and inside it.

Q3: What displacement current does a fast pulse drive?

I = C × dV/dt. A 1 nF part at 50 kV/µs carries 50 A, and that current flows through the electrode stack and the terminations, where local current density fuses thin electrodes.

Q4: Can a capacitor pass the DC PD test and still discharge at ignition?

Yes. Under a fast edge the field in an internal void rises before the charge redistributes, so bursts of 20–50 pC appear during ignition on parts that measured below 5 pC with DC excitation.

Q5: How long is the ignition life test?

100,000 cycles at the worst-case amplitude and repetition rate, with capacitance, tanδ and PD measured every 10,000 cycles. Reject the design when tanδ exceeds 0.1% or the capacitance drifts past 2%.

Q6: What pulse energy does the ignition capacitor store?

E = 0.5 × C × V². A 1 nF part charged to 12 kV holds 72 mJ, and that energy reaches the trigger transformer within a few microseconds on every start.
